Why You Need SPF in the Fall

The sun may have set on the last days of summer, and while you may be getting pumped for pumpkin-flavored everything and cooler, crisper weather, there’s one component of summer that you shouldn’t leave behind: sunscreen.

We consulted two NYC-based dermatologists, Dr. Michele Farber and Dr. Nava Greenfield, about why sunscreen is an absolute must during the fall, and here’s what they had to say. Plus, we’ll also tell you what sunscreen you should switch to for cooler temps.

1. UV rays are still a thing…

Wearing sunscreen in the fall is just as important as wearing it in the summertime,” says Dr. Greenfield. “The temperature outside is not always correlated with the UV rays that you are exposed to from the sun. UVA rays – and even UVB rays – are still directly hitting your skin, causing harmful effects, no matter how cold it is.”

2. …and clouds are no match for them!

“Cloud cover does not provide protection — up to 80% of UV rays still penetrate through clouds,” says Dr. Farber. “It’s a common misconception that you cannot get burned if you are not in direct sunlight, but your skin is definitely susceptible – so you should still use proper sun protection. Moreover, it’s always prone to aging, too.”

3. Your face matters a LOT during this time

“Although people are covering up their body, their face is still exposed to the sun’s UVA (aging) rays,” says Dr. Greenfield. “These are the rays that can cause signs of aging (discoloration, fine lines, etc.), and even skin cancer…all year round.”

4. Colder weather signals drier skin – and skincare + SPF can help

“It’s common for people to switch to a heavier moisturizer for daily use during colder seasons,” says Dr. Farber. “Just remember, it’s important to follow a few guidelines: Make sure that the products you choose are a minimum of SPF 30, apply a liberal layer to provide adequate SPF protection, and don’t forget to reapply with other products if you are outside for over two hours at a time, no matter what the temperature.”

Here’s where to get started…

So now that you know that you absolutely should be wearing sunscreen when you go apple picking, may we suggest some options?

If you’re seeking a moisturizer that deeply hydrates and provides expert broad spectrum SPF protection, look no further than Superscreen Hydrating Daily Cream SPF 40. This soft, rich and easily-absorbing formula is perfect for dry to normal skin types.

Another great choice is Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40, our 100% invisible SPF that's easy to wear, every day of the year.

And don’t forget to heed Dr. Farber’s words when it comes to reapplying every two hours! A wonderful option for crisp weather is our (Re)setting Refreshing Mist SPF 40 which makes it easy to reapply SPF over makeup.
