The Science of Sun Spots (and 3 Tips to Prevent Them)

Sunshine feels good, and spending time outside is one of life’s simple joys. But over the years, you might notice a few extra spots popping up on the places that see the most light — like your hands, face, and shoulders. They’re called sun spots, and they’re incredibly common. The good news? A few easy daily habits can help keep them from showing up in the first place.

Ahead, we’re breaking down what sun spots are and three simple ways to help prevent them, starting today.

What Are Sun Spots?

Sun spots (also called age spots) are flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation that show up on skin that gets repeated sun exposure over the years. As the Mayo Clinic notes, they can range from freckle-sized to about half an inch, and often appear in clusters that give the skin a speckled appearance.

These spots appear in areas that see the sun the most, such as hands, the tops of feet, the face, shoulders, and upper back. They happen when pigment cells become overactive. According to the Mayo Clinic, UV light speeds up the production of melanin, the natural pigment that gives skin its color. Over time, melanin can clump or accumulate more heavily in certain areas. Tanning lamps and tanning beds can also contribute to sun spot formation.

Sun spots are common, but there are simple steps you can take to help prevent them from forming in the first place.

3 Tips to Prevent Sun Spots

Limiting UV exposure is one of the best ways to help prevent sun spots. Here are three easy habits that make a big difference.

1. Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Daily SPF is one of the simplest, most effective ways to help protect your skin from sun spots. UVA rays (often called “aging rays”) stay the same strength all year long. They can also shine through clouds, cold weather, and windows, which means your skin is exposed even on days when the sun feels faint. That’s why we recommend using a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day and reapplying at least every two hours.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to sunscreen, which is why Supergoop! creates SPF for every step of your routine:

When SPF fits naturally into your routine, protecting your skin becomes simple and much more consistent.

2. Seek Shade During the Hottest Part of the Day

The sun shines every day (even when we can’t see it), but its rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you can, spend time in the shade during those hours to help reduce overall UV exposure. Keep in mind that UV rays still reach your skin when it’s cloudy or cold, so these timing tips are just part of the bigger picture — not a replacement for daily SPF.

3. Cover Up

Clothing is one of the easiest, most reliable forms of sun protection. A few helpful habits:

  • Choose tightly woven fabrics that cover your arms and legs.
  • Pick a broad-brimmed hat instead of a baseball cap for more coverage.

Small SPF Habits, Big Rewards for Your Skin

Sunshine is meant to be enjoyed, and a few simple habits can help keep your skin feeling its best along the way. With daily SPF, smart timing, and a little extra coverage when you need it, you can care for your skin without giving up the moments you love.

At Supergoop!, we’re all about having fun in the sun, and with sunscreen that fits effortlessly into your routine, you can enjoy every day safely and confidently.
